Description
This was one of my favourite sightings on my recent visit to the Kgalagadi. I will post 3 or 4 images of this lion and his friend!
It all began around 4am on this particular morning. We were woken by what I thought was an earthquake. The ground was vibrating and the sound was deafening. I very soon realized that it was a lion roaring and he was very, very close. There were also various "replies" from other lions from all wind directions. One reply was clearly much closer than the others. Keep in mind that on a wind still day/night, a lion's roar can be heard at least 10 kilometers away. It turned out that this guy was laying on a low dune a mere 20 meters from the perimiter fence of the camp. The whole camp was up at 4am and when the gates opened at 5:30 we were all streaming out. We were the 4th car that chose the correct direction and just outside the camp this guy decided to get up. I caught him just as he was doing his "cat thing" - stretching. He then proceeded towards the water. I will place the water photo tomorrow.
