Description

The Anderson Family: Mike is the short girl in the center of the photo and the youngest member of the family. Standing behind her in the center are her mother and father David and Grace. Her older brother Peter is in the blue shirt standing to the left of her mother. Jim, the oldest brother is in the light green shirt to the right of Mike. Marcus is wearing the maroon shirt, and Danny, is the tallest brother in the background. The idea was to make them look like they are all members of the same family. It's not so easy at it might sound when you start something like this and the characters went through a lot of changes to reach this state. I used subsurface toon shaders because I think that they are the best at giving a consistent look in skin from character to charater. I have found that when working with skin textures, a lot of the time they look great individually, but don't quite look right when you have another model in the scene with another skin texture. I didn't want that. The rest of it was just using the Genesis Head Morph resource kit, ethnicity for genesis and a lot of trial and error. I did not use any particular method in giving each character an expression. In my mind they all have their own personalities and I tried to bring them out in how they look. One pointer I will give out for free is use the sliders sparingly. I think a lot of people have a tendency to slide the slider all the way to one side, especially when trying to do expressions. In my opinion, it never looks right. Human expressions are subtle and less toony, and if you just use one slider they're all going to end up with the same ridiculous expression on their face that's too over the top to be believed. You use expression sparingly and you'll end up with a much better, more believable looking expression. It's kinda funny. The whole thing came about because I was trying to setup a living room to make it look lived in, and I realized that there were no pictures of the family anywhere --so I started setting this up to go in a picture frame, believe it or not.
