Description

Back in 1977 when the British sci-fi comic 2000AD first appeared it featured the adventures of Dan Dare- who originally appeared in the Eagle comic. This Dan Dare did not bear any resemblance to its 1950's Frank Hampson original. But I didn't really care about that at the time because the artist- Massimo Belardinelli rendered such amazing comic art one was blown away by his designs. Anyway-what has that got to do with this story- I hear you ask- well for his first story Dare fights a race of aliens called the Biogs. Said creatures came from a gas giant planet and had come to our solar system to set up shop on Jupiter. Their motives were that they were suffering from a fuel shortage - a very 70s theme- which they aimed to resolve by farming humans in the same way they farm humanoids on one of their moons. Anyway a big battle occurs in Jupiter's orbit and one of the biog biological space ships (all their science is based on genetic engineering- they have even cultivated living space-ships- which was quite a novel concept still in 1977) grabs hold of one of Jupiter's moons and hurls it at the human space ships. The resulting carnage and disruption is magnificently rendered by Belardinelli in fine gothic lines. I guess that this was the main inspiration behind this little episode. The moon in this episode I downloaded from the excellent Star Trek mesh site; it is by Raul Mamoru and is the Regula Moon that featured in Wrath of Khan. Some of the space backgrounds are created using the HFS Space System in DAZ.

A great twist. Has the entire fleet been taken out?? I look forward to the next instalment... I much appreciate the Belardinelli reference in your info above. One of my very favourite 2000AD strips was John Wagner, Alan Grant and Massimo Belardinelli's, "Ace Trucking Co". Sadly I lost the entirety of my fairly substantial 2000AD collection, with "progs" dating from the mid-seventies to early eighties, a couple or more decades ago. But I recently bought the two volume "The Complete Ace Trucking Co"… and I am very happy to have all of that lovely artwork to look at again.
