This takes me back ten years ago, when I used to keep stick insects. I thought they were just totally bizarre things, and also asexual so each one must be a clone of its parent, right? And they only eat privet hedge leaves (and related kinds) so I saw them as basically little more than animated leaf reconstitutions, if you will. "You are what you eat"...
I used to take close-up videos of them eating with my camcorder. I thought it was bizarre the way one of them could spend a whole day motionless and then burst into running if you disturbed it. I thought it was weird the way their hooked feet behaved exactly like vel-cro. I thought it was comical when the hatchlings didn't manage to break free from their eggshells and had to carry them around with them (here I would take pity and hold the shells for them so they could detach themselves). And I thought it a bit tragic when they lost their limbs in adulthood and couldn't get around to feed anymore (here I would take pity and wrap them up in tissue before getting something hard and stiff, maybe a book or a VHS cassette, and.....)
