Description

Found this pretty little fella hiding out in a carpet of oak leaves in Vancouver, British Columbia on a foggy day last October. This is Aminita muscaria, commonly called Fly Agaric; the quintessentail toadstool. It is famous for inducing psychodelic hallucinations. I watched a small patch develop to this blazing stage over a period of a few days. However, having the misfortune of cropping up on the UBC campus, they were nicked during the night; probably deftly harvested by some student who finally realized what they were.

ain't that the case? Great capture of this deadly beauty; though based on readings that I've come across, not as deadly as some would like to claim...

You are totally correct Mike. The poisnenous nature of Fly Agaric is apparently vastly over stated. Probably as an attempt by moralists to stop people from consuming them for their hallucenogenic properties.

So all you have to do is find someone wandering around mumbling about all the 'pretty colors...' :-P Speaking of which.. You have captured some lovely fall colors here, Roxy. The wonderful muted colors of the leaves are the perfect accompaniment to this colorful little fungus. Superb composition, my friend!

Very nice and clear shot. Great detail. I like how the 'shroom is nestled in the leaves. We were talking about these on New Year's Eve. It has been a long time.

A "heavenly" mushroom. But looks like painted. Beautiful in color, shape and mottle. And good nestled in the leaves.

What a gorgeous little 'shroom. I can believe that people were overstating the danger to keep people from eating them as a hallucinogen. Seems like we have a history of overstating the dangers of things like that to moralize in this country. Great capture!

Beautiful little toadstool. I had always thought that these were just in story books until I saw them growing in New Zealand... though I don't know if they had the same properties.. I never heard of anyone over there using them.
