Description

A couple of years ago, I spent Christmas with my son in Truckee, California. There wasn't much snow, but it was COLD. I also saw my first icicles, dangling from his roof. What cool is that I watched them GROW and I know some of you will laugh that. Of course they grow, you say. But I'm a beach girl and well, icicles are pretty dang unusual for me!! Oh, and how cold, you may ask---got down to about 8 above zero. I walked my dog late one night and was stunned at what that felt like. And again, I know it's not nearly as cold as it gets elsewhere, but it was quite an experience for me!!

Glad you enjoyed it, and a great icicle shot!

Beautiful photo of those icicles. I am glad you got to experience some of the beauty the cold can bring. A nice deep snowfall during the night is another beautiful thing. It makes everything seem more still and it looks so soft and the starlight and moonlight reflected from it creates an atmosphere of its own. Thanks for sharing your experience. :)

They are gorgeous to look at, but I prefer not to be there with them!

Aren't they pretty? Do NOT stand underneath them! That can be bad. :P Great shot ... I love the way the light plays with all those blues. Nice!

Beautiful image. When we were kids we had no money for popsicles so these had to do.

Cool shot. When I lived in Northern Michigan I'd see them where they would span from the rroof all the way to the ground.

Old man winter sprouts a beard. Wonderful contrast in this cold capture, Maz. And give a thought to the massive sub zero temperatures back east this 1/3/14.

I still always find icicles magical, probably because of my southern California beach upbringing (I remember whining about the cold when it got down to 50 degrees!) This is just gorgeous!

I'm skipping around, as always, trying to do a representative sample---and relieved that I actually commented on a bunch of these before, and not just in email!). I always liked this shot because it's from a dark vantage point---I know it's a roof, but it looks like you're shooting from inside a cavern. One of those many pov's you get, that look like something completely different than the actual place you're shooting from---like you're shooting from inside a dark prison (sorry for the joyful reference, lol), and you're looking up at the only light you can see. And the snow and light are pouring in from above, and the icicles are beautiful and blue-tinted and dripping. And Tara's right: Don't stand UNDER them too long, lol: Those suckers can fall. And when they do, they're like little javelins comin' right at ya. You'll see signs in the highrise district here which say: "Beware falling Ice!" You look up and you think, sh-t! If something fell from that height, I'd be killed! (You can't even SEE the icicles, they're so high up.) Anyway, one of your typically inventive pov's, turning simple icicles into a shimmering mystery. Very fine light and translucence. (I rarely get to say "translucence". Not a big deal, I admit, but there are certain words...so when I have the chance, I'm all over it. Translucence---not transcendence. Not transference, or trans-PAR-ence. ANYONE can say transparence. No: Trans-LUCENCE. Ok, I'm done. A beautiful icicle capture...) (Did you just get 3 ebots? If so, I apologize. The server's flickering again, but I'm gonna keep going. Just be patient if your email in the morning has 200,000 ebots from me...this outage isn't easy...

It is so cool to watch them drip especially if there is something metal underneath!
