Description

A series about aspects of Venice in winter: images I took last year when I and Flavia went to Venice Beach (Venezia Lido), where we lived for about 20 years. We hadn't returned for almost the same time. Here is a storm over the lagoon. Rainy weather accompanied us almost all the time and the tide was higher than the average, flooding the lower parts of the town. We are going to the Island of Venezia Lido, on the right you can see St. Mark's square and the Ducal Palace, on the left the Island of St. George. Thanks for your kind comments.

What a fantastic shot Sandra. I love how the city is so dwarfed by the power of the storm. Very clean image with lights and darks intermingled without over exposure.

The clouds are dramatic enough, but the mean-green of the ocean makes it more dramatic, more mean. In the US Midwest, storms bring pea-green clouds, an ugly yellow green that intimates something huuuuge to come (and it comes, and it's a wallop). But that opaque green in the water seems almost like paint. Very bad foreboding! And the skyline is so flat from a distance, its towers become iconic. This was a fine way to start this series, not because you're inviting us into a major storm, but because it sets the city in the context of not only nature, but of earth too. It really is a city on the water. This brings that home vividly.
