Description

Hello again! This here is ARCOS DE LA FRONTERA, another of the so called "White Villages". This here is the mother of all white villages. Arcos has 31 500 inhabitants and is situated in the andalucian province of CADIZ. it is situated ca. 70 kilometers northeast of Cadiz at the GUADALETE River. Its main attraction is the moorish old city on top of the hill with its narrow streets, the moorish castle and the cathedral. Arcos was founded bei the "Celt - Iberer" long before the Roman Empire. In roman times its name was ARCO BRIGA. Arcos is a very important historical place: A few miles away at the Rio Guadalete is the battlefield, where moorish troops won the battle against the West - Goths in 711 A.C. The westgothic king RODERICH was killed in action and moorish troops could occupy nearly 4/5 of Spain in the next few years. So this is the place were spanish history was new written and ruled for nearly 800 years. Arcos became part of the Emirate of Cordoba, then the Califate of Cordoba. When the Califate ended in the 11th century, Arcos was a single little kingdom, a so called TAIFA state with an own muslimic nobleman at the top. In 1263 Arcos was occupied by the christs. Arcos was now situated near the frontline between christ`s and muslimic territory, and so it got its name "de la Frontera" (at the borderline) After the fall of the muslimic Granada in 1492 many rich mansion - owners nearby settled down in Arcos and built themselves many fine palaces to demonstrate their social status. Some of these houses survived till today. Hope you enjoy this pic! Please feel free to send some comments, the are always welcome and helpful. Thanks for waisting your time here. Have a nice weekend!

Nice shot that deserves to be zoomed to fully appreciate. The white really stands out very sharply. I traveled around Andalucia many years ago & enjoyed it very much, so I will have to go back & check out 1 - 12 in this series when I have time...
