First of all Ana allow me to say how delighted I was to see you posting again. This pencil sketch is a wonderful work of art, and I like the fine detailing throughout. What stood out to me most about this lady is her kind face along with those expressive eyes.

Simplicity comes to my mind, Ana, and how it silently and patiently is waiting for us, how it encounters us with ease. Peace is the next thought, and this 'simple' drawing gives a lot of it, or, it depicts the longing for it so well. Then there is this thoughtfulness, that look of her appears so full of life's richness, she seems to look to a very specific place, there is even a hint of happiness in this, and this makes me think her thoughts and feelings are at a good place. Quite a beautiful image, Ana, and it is so nice to see something from you again!

Like all your portraits, this woman seems like someone we know well; and also like a piece of ourselves. You do portraits that feel very close, very intimate. In this case, she seems somewhat old---someone who's lived a long time and seen a lot of life, in all its good and bad. But, as you so often show in your portraits, she also seems very young, like someone who's never lost her youth. That's partly in her beautiful eyes, and partly in her gentle smile. (Age and timelessness in the same portrait.) Formally, she flows like music: Her body is leaning towards the center of the image; and you simplify her head-scarf into two pure lines flowing out into space (towards the right): Just beautiful. And your shading is simple, but shows years of drawing experience. (Meaning, only an experienced artist can make such simple drawings feel so complete and whole.) And it's "crowned" with those herbs (ervas): If she were holding flowers, it would be sweet; but by holding ancient and 'primal' herbs---as all herbs are---you've given a back-to-beginnings feeling to the piece, rooted in something very old and beautiful. The thin-ness and lines of the herbs are perfect contrasts to her mass. Finally, you leave the right half of the drawing open---hope and mystery. I agree with Martin that she's looking out to something beyond her; and there's real peace in that. This drawing has the feeling of a very experienced artist who's been doing art so long, she now can do a 'simple' drawing, and yet communicate deep wisdom and love. All of that is in this piece. Beautiful, simple and touching and a wonderful warm greeting for the middle of winter...

Now where did my words go. I am sure I commented on this. Wonderful drawing. Geeee, It is such a dear and peaceful lady leaning over a balcony with flowers in her hands. I just adore this drawing, Ana.. I do hope I have atleast said that in private, because that is what I would have done for sure. No one can draw people like you can. I have always admired how relaxing and naturally you can make your figures pose. I simply love it and I envy your talent and skills :-)))

This is so lovely, Ana! I love her expression and pose. When I see her, I think of someone looking out over a balcony, but also looking inward. There is a faraway look in her eyes. Perhaps she came out to the sound of birds, but as she looked out her mind traveled to a particular day and she became caught between times. Her eyes still seeing the garden and birds but her mind also seeing another day. There is a touch of wistfulness in her eyes, but mostly I see peace and love. Whatever she is thinking about, it is with love. I think the flowers are a part of the memory too. The touch of the stems, the view in front of her, the soft breeze through her hair, are with her here, but also a part of that other day. You drew her beautifully. The soft tendrils of her hair seem brushed by a gentle breeze. Her expression is both here and faraway, with a soft smile, and a dreamy look in her eyes. Her body leans forward towards the present and the past. Her hand gently holds the flowers. This is what I see when I look at her, and I wonder, what is she seeing, what is she remembering. But mostly, I think that she is beautiful with a deep inner beauty. Lovely drawing! As always, your work is so expressive.
