Description

Happy 2014 - coming up on 8 years here! "Shadows" - yes it's a Babylon 5 image! Interesting to be chasing the space-scape muse to see where she leads.... You may recall some earlier experiments with sculpting a moon in ZBrush for "The Edge of Oblivion." This led directly to more mucking about in ZBrush and the creation of the Shadow vessels from Babylon 5 shown here. These were created in ZBrush from ZSpheres and sculpted in high resolution with a lot of details you cannot see in the image. The foreground is a high poly version and the one nearer the planet is lower poly. In keeping with the original approach by Foundation Imaging, the surfaces are rendered with a procedural 'cellular' pattern using pwEffect. The result is intended to be a tribute to the original, rather than an exacting re-creation - but I think it comes off well. The planet texture was created in Pro Fantasy's 'Fractal Terrains 3' which I've had around for some time. The latest version has the ability to export normal maps, and while these need some adjusting to render in DAZ Studio (invert the red and green channels and decrease the intensity by fading over a RGB 127,127,255 layer), they make a huge difference in how the surface renders. I did export the textures at a resolution of 8192x4096 which pushed FT right to the edge. The planet and ships were rendered in separate passes in DAZ studio and compositied in Photoshop. Typical of my recent workflow, the starfield was created from scratch and the nebula was started in POV ray and extensively reworked in Photoshop as well. Truly a mixed media effort! Thanks as always for your comments and feedback. These space renders aren't carrying the cache and attention of a NVIATWAS but I'm having a lot of fun making them and I appreciate your taking the time to click through and read. Feel free to post or PM with any questions, I'm, always happy to share my process!

I've just bought ZBrush and looking forward to getting my hands dirty. I've also just bought the complete Babylon 5 DVD set, having only seen the pilot when I lived in Canada. Looking forward to those too. Nice work on the ships and planet.

A superb tribute to a great show! I have been watching a re-run these last few weeks on Watch channel in the UK, so this is very timely! Wonderfully done.
