Description
I'd like to take credit for these, but the truth is that I discovered dozens of these carefully constructed cairns strewn about this beach on a walk in Yachats on the Oregon coast a few years ago. There may have been over a hundred of them & they all looked very similar, so I'm assuming they were done by one person or a small team. Someone with a lot of patience & a lot of time on their hands...

It will probably die out before too long, much like the inukshuks are dying out. Nice shot though. It could be a little risky walking below all these, LOL!

Yachats is such a beautiful place. I never saw anything like this when I was there about 12 - 15 years ago. However the beaches of the Oregon coast are some of the most interesting I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing.

I'm sorry to ask a dumb question, but what actually 'is' a cairn. I mean, what are they meant for? Why would someone have done this. Is it art? It's just something that we never see over here. I remember seeing a few in Britain marking old graves. It makes for a great photo.

No such thing as a dumb question, Andrew. Building cairns can be a fun thing to do, a form of temporary art like sand castles or can actually serve as navigational aids. When I hiked in Canyonlands, cairns were used to mark trails in the desert. In areas with broad expanses of land & no obvious paths, they're less obtrusive than signposts. Check out the article on Wikipedia for a lot more info on cairns.

I was just talking to a friend today about stacking cairns. We've seen them in a lot of places, and always enjoy the experience. There's something Zen about doing it, about contemplating the stacks. Of course we take pictures ... :P How fun to see so many in one place!

My first thought was .... a photomontage. But here someone boredom seems to have had or have a sense of esotericism. Wonderfully discovered and shot!

at first illusion, the cairns look large, but I suspect they aren't too big.

Love the art; more in the theme of the tree-art, a few uploads back. Something very primal about these, sitting along the mounds and slopes; they feel ancient, like icons from a lost civilization. And the picture's art too: You have a genuine dramatic eye, as this is another of your sweeping shots of nature, with the sweep moving down and into the right, opening not only to more light, but to variety in hue and marvelous shapes and textures. The ocean intrudes beautifully, and the sky opens up for us as we move back, out of the scene. I love this photo and its sweep and music. And, in the lower half (left), the cairns pick up the light very nicely, making them seem alive. Wonderful shot. Love how you captured this.

I have seen them marking hiking trails before but I have to say that you captured a beautiful costal scene!
