Description
The monument to Victor Emmanuel II, first king of Italy. The building was completed in 1925 and it required demolition of the surrounding historical area. It's hard to miss. Yet for all its size and being visible from most of the city, most people know Rome for the Colosseum, which seems a "take that" from the Flavian dinasty.
I'm half-joking -- I got the feeling that the people building it were trying too hard, but it's undeniably an impressive place with a gorgeous view of the city.
Thank you for all your comments! Any kind of feedback is appreciated.

After the Second World War, didn't the Americans call it the '^wedding cake'?

That's one of its nicknames, yes, although I don't know how it started.
