The tradition of lighting the fires has pagan origin and had the function of bringing about new crops. Is associated with the Christian mythology because Saint Anthony is considered the guardian of hell and protector of animals. After the plague of 1656 in which perished about two-thirds of the population of the Kingdom of Naples (in Vastogirardi the number of families was reduced from 258 to 88 in a few months), the tradition of the fires spread to all countries are also taking a purifying value.
