Description

Houses like these along Kirchstrasse in Alt-Moabit can be found through much of the inner city of Berlin. They were usually built in the late 1800's, have five to six stories with what is known in German 'Hinterhoefen', additional apartments away from the street around backyards. Many of these houses were damaged or destroyed during World War II. They have been rebuilt in a slightly different, more modern style, with modern amenities. A casual observe would have a hard time distinguishing the difference, but my brother (billcody) who lives in the neighborhood, pointed out the differences. What I noticed since the fall of the wall about 20 some years ago is that all houses looked well maintained, not only here where the German government moved after the fall of the wall, but throughout the city. This neighborhood reminds me of similar neighborhoods in other cities, like Paris, Barcelona, and Buenos Aires. This picture was taken on 23 December 2013, Sig...

It would be my guess that the owners have a real sense of pride about who they are and where they live. it reflects in how they take care of their area. great capture and narrative

Those homes are beautiful, but it looks so packed. Very tight quarters on the streets. Beautiful shot!

I love these district also. Much has been restored. But I am always happy when I "ancient house" discover. Advertising from the past, backyards ... up to 5 courtyards, where a life of its own held. Here were many small workshops and often with horse transports. Eben real "Zille milieu". I am glad that you see Berlin with eyes open.

I love how you were able to capture the architecture and the vehicles together, but without the vehicles blocking the buildings. Thanks for sharing the info and the scene. :)

I wouldn't like to move heavy furniture up to the fifth or sixth floor! Yikes! But they certainly are picturesque, and undoubtedly lovely places to live once the furniture is all situated. :P
