Description
Captured 1/20/14, early in the AM, about a mile from my habitat.
No way was I going to pass up that backlighting. I even added a frame as a final touch.
I tried researching the name of this particular variety of succulent, and was met by a list of hundreds. I went through about a dozen, then called it a day. I don't have the time or patience for that kind of effort. Ergo, if anyone knows the exact name/family/genera of this one, let me know and I'll change the title. And it is not Hens and chicks.
Update! Update! Poet001 saved the day with this timely ID. Thank you much!
Aeonium (tree houseleek) is a genus of about 35 species of succulent, subtropical plants of the family Crassulaceae. The name comes from the ancient Greek "aionos" (ageless). While most of them are native to the Canary Islands, some are found in Madeira, Morocco, and in East Africa (for example in the Semien Mountains of Ethiopia).

I'm sorry that I didn't answer your question in my first comment, but I hadn't read the part where you were at a point of frustration, trying to figure out the name of this plant. It stood right out when I saw it.

Then Aeonium it is, my friend. Thanks tons for identifying this beauty, and am changing the title forthwith.

I'm a week late on my comments, btw, which wasn't intended. But I look everyday, always wondering what new visions you'll post of the universe beneath your nose...First, the framing is perfect for the shot, as it's a centered shot, half in light and half in shadow; and the background plants seem to "embrace" the succulent; so framing completes the balances. (Also, a good choice of green with lighter greens for your color.) The backlighting is amazing---it seems to render those dense leaves into sheer translucence. That intense low light---the light's definitely not overhead, due to the hour---which turns an otherwise thick subject---a succulent---into a light-shadow show. Also, the bloom seems to come forward, out of 'air', looking right at us, as in a portrait, with the petals lined up for us as they are. Because the stem is either blurred out or hidden by the bloom, you've created a 'free floating' feeling, which is lovely. I realize you find light and shadow in so many subjects; they're a transcendent 'music' in your hands, and they transform whatever they touch. Beautiful work.
