Description
Thanks for the comments on my previous images. This is a Galah, a member of the cockatoo family. Commonly called Galahs or Pink and Greys but also (less commonly) known as a Roseate Cockatoo. These guys live for as long as 80 years and mate for life, they are one of the most common birds found in most areas of Australia. There are about 40 or so in the flock that visits our yard and gets a bit noisy when they all arrive at once but they can be great fun to interact with. Some of the younger ones will land on my arms and eat from my hands. Galahs are favored as pets because they can be taught to talk but I see no need to keep one caged when a little bit of food will attract many wild birds into the yard

What an awesome picture of one of these beauties!! I mentioned in another comment of mine on a later pic that over here in the US they sell for thousands of dollars. I can't imagine living somewhere that these beauties come to eat!! I have seen shows where farmers over there will shot these lovely birds out of the sky because they are crop pests. It seems that one man's pest is another man's expensive pet. This shot is just jaw-dropping good!!

Thank you for another fabulous photo of the galah. We spent several days in the Bush just outside Laura on the Cape York Peninsula in 2006 and awoke every day at dawn to the call of the kookaburras followed by the cockatoos. I always assumed that a few of them were the galahs we saw during the day. It was truly awesome to see flocks of parakeets and cockatoos flying overhead. Got to get back there some day.

Thanks Teri, Laura is around 3000 miles from me but one of my favorite parts of the country and home to my favorite bird, the Palm Cockatoo.
