Description

Dorothy and Fritz. Another in my long-running series 'The triumph of Content over Quality'. Consider this: Dorothy was 101 last week, January 15th 2014. She is tall and fit, walks upright without the aid of any aids, has all her brain function and a remarkable memory both short and long term. However, she is very deaf, and conversation is by shouting into her hearing aids, and she has extremely impaired vision. So she can't see subtitles on the blurred tv, or hear it or the radio, She has no relations: luckily the person who still lives in her once shared bungalow sees to her affairs and visits once a week. The other women don't seem to like her much, even though she is kind and tries to be friendly. I think it's probably because they can't be bothered. She used to work for the Pru when they still had agents out on the road. When she told me her life story she apologised for boring me! I was fascinated. I am trying to persuade her to go to 'blind club', where they have all sorts of things going on. We shall see. The home are going to see if the audiologist can recommend suitable headphones to facilitate radio listening She can remember what we talked about last week each visit, which is more than I can...... See a colour photo with them both looking at the camera Here

Both lovely captures and Dorothy and Fritz seem to be getting along so well, it can be difficult for hearing people when attempting to communicate with a deaf person but it would be so wrong for fellow residents to give up... this woman clearly has so much to give people as a friend, it would be a shame if that went to waste... she sounds and seems like a charming lady who has lived a full life and thankfully able to remember and share her experiences with anyone wishing to know about it... I have much respect for my elders....I know that does tend to come with a little age too but people are people and it takes two to make a conversation.. especially if one has hurdles and is willing to jump them and make the effort.. others with less problems to deal with should do so and not be so selfish. Lovely captures there Andrea.

She sounds a lovely lady. My son volunteers for the blind & takes them bowling, cricket etc.

Some dogs and the elderly just seem to click. Our Holly was that way. She had to say hello to everyone on her way over to mom, and then she'ld park herself with her head on mom's lap and just enjoy the company. Lovely shot.

From your description she sounds like a grand lady. Don't give up on her hearing. They are doing wonders in audiology these days. She looks as if she is lecturing Fritz. "No begging for treats. It is undignified."

An amazing innings for this fine Lady and how civil of Fritz to make her feel loved, without trying ... and such a great pity and tragedy, that there are no family and friends left - to make her feel that way, it makes me feel sad ! It would be great to record her stories [for a book] and then you could illustrate them Andrea ... ;) BB

A beautiful moment well captured! You would think she is the owner of Fritz, her look is so focused and in tune.

They seem to understand each other quite well; Fritz is good at his job!

Fritz is an excellent communicator, and seems to get on quite well with Dorothy despite her visual and hearing problems! An inspiration is what this lady is, someone to emulate! There is a 93 year old lady at church who is the same way, sharp as a tack, nimble as a deer, and drives probably better then most!

Both shots are quite engaging! It seems to me you do a double service, bringing the dogs as well as yourself. :)

A delightful narrative about Dorothy and I like the color version over on FlickR. God Bless her at 101 and deaf and going blind. I bet she has a fun this with Fritz and I bet Fritz is a great listener.
