Description

NASA and others have bold plans about actually making direct contact with an asteroid, and either mining it, or moving it to a closer and more stable orbit for further study. People sometimes forget just how difficult that would be. Imagine trying to jump onto a bouncing ball, from the roof of your house. With one eye closed. Space craft is another very old model I made at least a year or two ago, I'm not even sure if I've ever really used it, too. Asteroids were also my own creations, textures for them are my own, rendered in Bryce and composited with the background in Photoshop. No other postwork was done on the asteroids, how they look here is exactly how they came out of Bryce. I think I'm finally making progress on them!

Excellent presentation, and a great model! Are the asteroids just spheres with displacement,or built up of various primitive shapes? Looks really good !

They're a grouping of the built-in "rocks" primitives that Bryce has. I have struggled to find ways of getting the kinds of shapes NASA's probes have been revealing, but close over-lapping groups of those rocks seems to work fairly well.

You're doing a freaking outstanding job on these asteroids, Mike! I'm just blown away that you do these in Bryce - it looks more like Vue or Zbrush work! The technology is truly amazing indeed! Like hitting a fly a mile away with a BB gun.. Hey! My name is going to an asteroid named Bennu - and beyond..... http://www.nasa.gov/press/2014/january/nasa-invites-public-to-send-names-on-an-asteroid-mission-and-beyond/index.html#.UuS4CbQo7RY

You are so clever to create an image with a basis in the modern space exploration goals! Very well done! I think you need a career with NASA doing their graphics! =) Stay warm up there~ I for one, will be soooo glad for Spring! It has been a long time since it has been this cold so far south, we aren't used to it!

I jump onto bouncing balls from the roof of my house all the time. But I must admit I do it with my eyes open... Great concept and render.
