On a rare evening when no raids were to be held, Bekan, son of Torfa, took his grandson Arnstein, son of Gufa to a near by spring to give him a gift he had made him. Arnstein always looked forward to these special nights as his grandfather always told him such grand tales about his battles. So, in only the pale moonlight, Bekan presented Arnstein with the longship toy that he had fashioned during his last long voyage at sea. “Now, Arnstein, all that is needed is a huge sail with our clan’s symbol and some strong warriors to work the oars. Of course you shall be the leader of your army.” remarked Bekan. Arnstein felt honored that his grandfather had thought of him while away, but knew that he was the only male that was heir to take Bekan’s place as king of their clan when that time came. His father, Torfa, had died bravely during a severe battle when they mounted an invasion on Wales. So, setting the ship in the water, Bekan began to tell his grandson of the most recent journey home and their unexpected battle with the dreaded Draugen. Arnstein knew from the other tales told in the caves at night that Draugen was a water creature that is said to be the ghost of a man who died at sea. “When we saw him, he looked like a huge monster and was covered in seaweed and was rowing in a half a boat. Then, when we heard him scream, a fearsome sound indeed, we thought we were done for……..” at this he gave Arnstein a wink and a sly smile and continued “Then we all awoke with a fierce hangover!!!” With that Arnstein and Bekan rolled with laughter.
