Hi, I'm Andrea, and I'm interested in creatures and plants both wild and tamed, and people of all sorts. I only use a compact digital camera ,as I love being able to get it into a back pocket, and not have to cart heavy kit about. I carry a Panasonic Lumix TZ series, binoculars and a hand lens almost everywhere. Most of my outings are with the dogs so I only use point and shoot.
I am getting the hang of Photoshop, thanks to some very kind folk on RR!Â
I have a wildlife garden in Bournemouth, Dorset, in the UK, and spend a lot of time there . I retired from teaching art to teenagers a while ago.
I'm now getting some good results with my digi compacts; it took me a while to make the switch from my old film camera, an 1960 ish Pentax Spotmatic, but the mistakes are much cheaper! Â
I have 4 lodgers, 3 dogs and a parrot who, as at 2017, I have had 40 years.
I has so far had 19 dogs, mostly rescues.

a really interesting collection

The close up makes them look HUGE or maybe they are for sail mending? An interesting shot either way, well done!

I love the POV on these. Thanks for sharing.

You will score a lot of points with this pic Andrea, nice one.

Amazing capture Andrea. God bless.

I like this my friend. How lovely they are, and the curved one is like a needle they use to stitch a wound.

Flipping heck, what a collection.

Very interesting shot! Great capture! :)

Fine shots... needles are as imperfect as many other things when we go close with macro... I have been obsessed with this concept for ages.. ever since getting a digital microscope to remind one things that look precision are by no means so when you zoom in. Would love to see that single needle shot without post work.

Awesome macro of your etui of needles, most likely used to repair and sew heavy materials such as sail cloth and canvas, and oxidized after centuries of use, Andrea. They were probably handed down from as far back as the reign of Henry the V.

Wonderful capture Andrea

Very cool subject and capture!

these are totally awesome Andrea, I particularly like what you did with the arrow-head one on flikr .. I think that one might be for sewing leather. I have a set of these somewhere, but I think I don't think my leather sewing needle is more triangular. Your's is a perfect javelin for the wee folk!

My mother had a set like this and knew how to use them very well...for herself. As for me, when I needed something she would show me how to do it. To this day I am the only man I know who can sew. A fine close up image. I also like what you did in the flickr image although it looks more like a spear.

A terrific collection, and a most excellent subject for a photograph.

Very similar to a set that I made for myself for leather and general use. A large curved one like you have is very useful for sewing up a turkey after it has been stuffed. My set is stuck through a small piece of leather and folded a couple of times, and has a dozen or more needles. I will photograph it sometime.

cool shot ! I have the same set in my sewing-box

... still useful and aged with dignity! a real still life!
danapommet
I zoomed and they almost look like weapons - same for the FlickR version!

I think there is a set like this in my mum's ole sowing box.

to think my wife is an acupuncturist!
