Description

an end of and era... the last splice of film at The Monarch Theatre. For those of you who don't know, (and I'm hoping that there are a lot of you) I work as the manager of one of the oldest movie theatres in Canada (probably North America, but why quibble). The Monarch Theatre was purpose designed to be a movie theatre, not just being a vaudville house converted over but built to show movies. The doors opened in 1911, and has been operating ever since. And now she enters a new era. Digital! We had a digital cinema system installed this week. The amount of room needed meant that we had to take out our old 35mm projector. A little background if'n you don't mind.... for many years the projection suite had two projectors side by side, lit by carbon arcs... These were Peerless Projectors. A number of years ago, they upgraded to a platter system which consisted of three platters where the film was assembled, run through the projector and then automatically re-wound itself onto an empty platter. When the movies come in, they have to be assembled, or built up. When the run is finished, they have to be broken down onto their reels. When the last movie played (Hunger Games 2) and finished, I did the break down..... a somewhat sad and poignant moment. after the main breakdown, I took off the trailers and wound them onto a separate reel.... and this is the last splice End of An Era... over a hundred years of Film... Beginning of a New Era..... another Hundred Years... can't wait to see what happens in that time! comments welcome, please enjoy!

That's really interesting. When I was a kid all the movie theaters had been Vaudeville houses with very ornate decorations.

‎When we used to live on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland [we are now on the border of the Gold Coast, Qld. & Tweed Coast, N.S.W.) I visited occasionally the old Majestic Theatre in Pomona ... read all about here: www.themajestictheatre.com.au/‎ - in case you are interested in the 'silent stuff' ??? ;))) they served a cup 'o' tea and biscuits, during the intervals !!! (no, not cold lemon drinks - as by the pool) BB

Nostalgic for sure. Must be enjoyable managing such a large theater.

Mate, I feel sorry that the 'Tech' era has swamped everything.. I personally dislike it.. While I know digital is clearer its not the same.. As you say, end of era.. And, by the way, I'd LOVE YOUR JOB! LOL Rob
