I know it is not exactly right.. Lot's wife should be behind them , according to scripture.. just chalk it up to Artistic License I guess...

Evocative and thought-provoking scene. Even with what happened to Lot's wife, we see God's mercy to Lot and the others, that since she was in the rear, they were spared seeing her demise.
