Description
This pristine wetland, made up of 5 lakes and several frog ponds and more than 100 acres of bushland, is home to a multitude of birds, animals, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Hard to believe that 25 years ago this was a bauxite mine (inset 1). When operations ceased in the late 80s the mining company flooded the open cut pits and re-forested the land. Local conservation groups then introduced a few species of reptiles and amphibians to the area and the local department of land management stocked the lakes with carp and perch, which in turn attracted the birds back to the area. The mining company also built a photography hide on each of the 5 lakes (inset 2). Nowadays no-one would ever know there was a mine here at all.

Beautiful. And the story behind it perhaps inspires hope for future reclamations of the land.

Beautiful shot & good to hear a positive story about the environment once in a while to counterbalance what is generally a pretty bleak outlook...
