Description

The Royal Docks are found East London and consist of three docks: The Royal Albert Dock, The Royal Victoria Dock, and The King George V Dock. These were built to accomodate large ships which were unable to dock further up the Thames. Historically, the purpose of this area was the importing and unloading of food to refridgerated warehouses, which were transported via cargo ships from all over the world. These docks were completed between 1855 and 1921, and were in commercial use up until 1981. Since then, this place has undergone regeneration and redevelopement. As well as a number of residential homes builts, there is also the ExCel Exhibition centre which hosts various events throughout the year, and also London City Airport - built in 1988. I went to this area primarily to see the Emirates Air Line experience which is a cable car ride that takes you from Royal Victoria to The O2 (Millenium dome) - the cable cars can be seen on the left of the pano. However, when I got here I was so impressed by the scale of the dock that I decided to check out this place instead. Dispite the redevelopement, they have kept features which hark back to its past - the huge cranes which can be seen have been kept intact. There is also an expansion bridge which scales the dock at great height giving some wonderful views of London (right of pano). From this bridge you also have some great views of planes going into land at the airport. A place I highly recommend checking out - if anything for the cable car ride (which I have yet to try!). This place is huge, I didn't even get to check out everything here, so I look forward to posting more panos of this place. Original 9417x2941 Many Thanks for viewing!!
