Description

The Rialto is and has been for many centuries the financial and commercial centre of Venice. It is an area of the San Polo sestiere of Venice. The area was settled by the ninth century, when a small area in the middle of the Realtine Islands either side of the Rio Businiacus was known as the Rivoaltus, the "high bank". Soon, the Businiacus became known as the Grand Canal, and the district became the Rialto, referring only to the area on the left bank. The first dry crossing of the Grand Canal was a pontoon bridge built in 1181. The development and importance of the Rialto market on the eastern bank increased traffic on the floating bridge, so it was replaced in 1255 by a wooden bridge. It was partly burnt in a revolt in 1310. In 1444, it collapsed under the weight of a crowd watching a boat parade and it collapsed again in 1524. The present stone bridge, a single span designed by Antonio da Ponte, was finally completed in 1591. It is similar to the wooden bridge it succeeded. Two inclined ramps lead up to a central portico. On either side of the portico, the covered ramps carry rows of shops. Thanks for your kind comments.

Love the series..those in the gondola look cheerful. Perhaps the umbrellas help with their colours

a romanticized visual of this famous sight, in pinks and darkened edges. And the boat in front, on a slight angle to the bridge (nice counterpoint) brings us into the human immediately. I like its inclusion a great deal (and no other major boats in the foreground---nice clear visual choice). The saturated hues makes each building facade stand out; and your pov lets the line of buildings flow down from the upper right corner into the bridge itself, which is one of the main focal points of the shot. Fascinating history too, including the disasters: a testament to the tenacity of humans that, despite collapses, wars, invasions, looting, and horrors that can take place within or on top of a structure, they still keep it, renovate it, bolster it, strengthen it, etc. That's one of the gifts of your narratives, to bring such historical lines-of-events to us in capsulized form. And the umbrellas---to return to the present---are in a beautiful array of saturated hues. Almost an image from a 19th C. French painting...Fine image and compressed history once more, Sandra.
