Description

It was a beautiful, calm evening, and with wonderfully mild temperatures for a change! I took the Phantom up to about 115 ft to see how its camera would handle night shots - I was quite pleased with the results. DJI recently released a firmware upgrade for the camera that allows it to shoot Adobe DNG (digital negatives) RAW format, along with a jpeg image. I've included both the unenhanced photo just as it came from the camera, as well as the enhanced version. A RAW image contains a whole lot more information than can be seen in the original photo. I was able to pull a lot more detail out of the photo as you can see in the second image. There's quite a bit more noise in the enhanced image, of course, but the detail that comes out is amazing. I'll also post a video of the flight on YouTube in the next day or so. I did not do any kind of correction for the lens distortion. Almost as much fun was hearing all the disembodied voices coming from up and down the street (mostly from kids)..... "Hey, look at that!" "What is it??" "WOW" "Lookit! Lookit!" The Phantom has high-intensity red and green LEDs on all 4 rotor arms - red for the front, green for the rear and satellite lock. They can easily be seen in bright daylight. At night, it REALLY shows up! My next door neighbor came outside, and said it looked like a UFO! We got a good chuckle out of it - her grandson is an officer with the Independence Police. I told her if anyone reported a UFO, she could tell him it was only her nutty neighbor flying a quadcopter! I'm still working on the next T.N.A. page - the renders for the next few pages are going to be fairly complex, so they're taking a bit more time. But hopefully they'll be worth it! Hope everyone is having a great new week! Remember to keep our friends who are in need in your thoughts and prayers. Thanks for dropping by, and for all your wonderful comments and support!

you need to get someone to take a shot of your craft at twilight so we can see the purdy colours of the LEDs

Very cool Rod... I am amazed by the detail you could draw out of the original image, but as a 'picture', the un-enhanced one is very cool! the neighborhood comments must have given you a bit of a chuckle!!

VERY COOL capture here, Rod. I'd be terrified of taking it up at night for fear of losing it.

WOW! Those are frickin cool images Rod. Not sure which I like better because they both have their pluses and minuses. Sounds like LOTS of fun. Glad you got some decent weather for a change. Our forecast is that it will be in the 50's most of this week. Hope they're right. We're getting buried little by little under all this snow.

impressive night shots. they have become very popular. even a concept car at Detroit has it's own quadcopter that can give the driver information about problems ahead

Wow. That's totally cool! I can easily see the route from your place out to the main road and on to the freeway. When we come out there in April, I'll be able to use this as a map in case we forget how to get to your house! LOL!

Great nightshot from your private UFO, Rod! And as we all can see, it shows the curvature of the Earth! ;o)

Lol. You are having way too much fun, Rod. I'd like one, but since I'm right up close to the bombing field of the largest military and experimental base in the world, I'm pretty sure the Howitzers (lol) would have me in their cross hairs in a heartbeat. Fried dragon stinks for aeons. =}:8{>~
