Description

An odd shot, but fun to capture. (Much better full---it's huge.) Still commenting. Thanks for your wonderful support! Peace, Mark

You have managed to instill into this image something I feel when waiting to cross. I can't nail it, but it's a fusion of irritation at the smells and waste of time, a fear of being knocked down (I was once when I was 6), and anger at the accompanying bass belting out from the 'In Car Entertainment' woofers. But your photo has isolated all that in a moment of silence, like a still from the slowmo just before the fatal crash.

This is exactly what it looks like when a person steps outside on a very sunny day. The snow is blinding to begin with but the reflection of the sun makes it all aglow. And the cars race/blur by and kick up the haze of white dust. Just like this! I can FEEL the spray of cold snow hit my face when I look at this. Makes me want to close my eyes and just absorb the gutsy winter air. Hey - Lovely lady on the phone in your cool boots - may I borrow your sunglasses???

I agree with Odie about coming out from a darker place to a street so white of snow, that is hurts the eyes. But perhaps there wasnt any snow, but your awesome juggling with your photos like a wizard :-) There is something science fiction-ish over the people, like they just came out of the spaceship and saw a street on earth for the first time. A really beautiful shot and postwork, dear Mark.

Mark, for myself this experience was a totally different one. While the brightness of the blinding light reflecting off the snow is eye-catching, my focus was on the assembled people. They are a perfect representation of what city life can be. That is at its best a blending of cultures that learn to coexist peacefully

A fascinating whiteout effect. I seem to be getting mixed messages from this image. On the one hand, it's clearly an urban scene - that would be obvious even without the title as a tip off. Yet the huge expanse of whiteness gives it a feeling of calm & spaciousness, rather than the stress & crowding that I normally associate with city life. This is not a criticism - just an observation. Perhaps it conveys the concept that individuals can maintain a feeling of inner peace even in the midst of outward bustle & turmoil?

I like the composition of this photo - all the white space (and snow) and the little group of people, adding color and life. It makes me shiver and glad to be inside and cozy. :o)

I love the "negative space" that the snow gives, which is actually positive to me as I love snow so much. Then the people and vehicles arranged around the edges seems to make the snow something even more precious and unspoiled. Not a popular view, I know, but I'm weather-weird. A very satisfying image altogether!

With the brightly lit and presumably warm section on the left, the individuals on the right seem like an anomaly, all warmly clad in their winter best, Mark. Southern California on the left, Chicago on the right. This is really typical of your recent work with light and dark, and another sterling image to add to your already long list of capital images.

This is the moment ... the exact moment ... when time dilates, slows, and finally stops. I've never experienced it for myself, although I've been there in the beginning split seconds where I know it's going to happen. Everything gets quiet, nothing moves. It's like an anechoic chamber, perhaps, or suspended animation. The light gets brighter and brighter until nothing is visible, and suddenly everything starts to move normally again. Hmmmmm .....

wondrous! Great comments above...what imagination this picture excites... I keep saying to myself...what snow? I don't see any signs of snow...not on the car tires, no slush on the streets or on the shoes/boots. You've done a magnificent job of color/fade (my term). The contrast stirs a mood for everyone. My thoughts fly back in time to my grandmother taking me via subway to New York City when I was 9 and 10, she slowed by some form of cancer but wanting to show me the great museums of New York City while she still could (my mother had died when I was 8). We'd pause on corners like this waiting for the traffic to halt...then rush across... Ah, fond memories.
