Description

Party animals, for sure. These birds are very large, standing 5 feet tall, with a 6 foot wing span. For size comparison, look at the pair of mallard ducks floating at center-left in the picture. A Miocene crane fossil, thought to be about ten million years old, was found in Nebraska and is structurally identical to the modern Sandhill crane, making it the oldest known bird species still surviving! All of these Sandhill crane photos should be viewed full size, especially this one, or you might miss some of the party action!

What a great pic! That is my sort of party, being not at all keen on the human sort.
