Description

Had to make a replica sword and a custom sword for the next unit in my course in 3ds Max, had a few issues and then some (!!!) with the UV unwrapping. Not very user friendly at all and found out the hard way, that the supposedly non-destructive modifiers can totally f..k up your UV map...didn't tell us that in the tutorial video. Anyhow after several versions I finally got something that is passable and with a bit of help from searching the web and also some tips from MTLegacy (thanks Sam) and NO thanks to my tutor ! Now I have even more respect for artists who model their own stuff, especially in 3ds Max, now if I had to do this in say Lightwave or Zbrush, I would have had about 20 different completed designs by now...oh dear... :o( Cheers jif3d

Isn't that usually the way. The real world users know more than the teachers. No offense intended to the teachers out there. But seems like I've always learned more from people in the real world than "most" of the teachers I've had. Granted there have been a few that stood out, but on the average....... Good job Jeff. Hope it gets easier as you use it more...

The textures look just as good on the low res model as they do on the high res version ... I should know, as I have seen both models - (Mum's the word) ;)) It's lucky, that you find the time to work most problems out for yourself - and that's learning the hard way! cool effort on the damsel, but not in distress ! LOL ... BB

Cool stuff Bud, I don't know anything from 3DSmax or Lightwave but I get what your saying....like the difference between Mandelbulb-3D and Mandelbulber in my world I'm sure, one is just Trick the other is just Tricky to use.... Peace

Yeah !!! Very good, keep doing things in 3dsMax, after a while you will find your way to do UVs. It seems that practice is the best way for me ;-)

Great work, Jeff!! I too think torturials not always is easy or mentioning some details of importance. I sometime get the feeling these people doing this communicate to people allredy wellknown with the subjects told - why do it then? :o[
