Description
It's been only since the 1970s that we started to understand how the Venetian lagoon 'breathes', inflowing and outflowing water, during the centuries. This happened thanks to the collaboration of fresh water fishers, hydraulic engineers, heretic historians, and an amateur archaeologist that became THE authority on the lagoon's archaeology. In fact, there were rumors among the fishing community ( a very tough bunch, especially the mostly illegal clam fishers) that in some parts of the lagoon human bones could be found trapped in the nets. After years of serious research in very difficult conditions, today we know most, if not all, the submerged areas that once were flourishing ports, towns and monasteries. The human bones came from church graveyards or areas were the bodies of the victims of the many outbreaks of plague were disposed of by the Very Serene Republic of Venice.

Great shot, fantastic architecture and history with Venice, always mysterious... never the same after that movie "Don't Look Now"... always avoid dark isolated locations, there might be a deformed midget in a red raincoat and hat with a razor waiting to give you a very close shave. lol
drifterlee
That's really interesting. Who knows what they will find?

Lovely shot again Sandra and interesting info as always provided by you. Living that close to the water would make one think the buildings would be damp and cold inside and would always be in danger of major leaks.. I don't think I could live there..

"Dad, can I borrow the boat? I want to go to the mall." Another outstanding image with your usual excellent historical commentary. Having read a little of the preservation efforts I fear the sea will eventually win its battle with Venice.
