Dangerous little monsters in numbers! I recall my dad telling of the summer they invaded my grandfathers potato field, they went with 5 gal buckets and sticks, knocked the critters in the bucket, ran to the end of the field to empty them! Did this over and over again! Needless to say they were short potatos that year! Great photo!!

Ladybugs eat other bugs, such as aphids, and other soft bodied bugs .. like mites, and scales, and white flies and tons of others. None of which are welcome in a garden, or on a farm. So no wonder Windigo's grandfather didn't get a lot of potatoes the year they collected all the ladybugs and dumped them away from the potato field! Had they left them, they would've eaten all those insects that destroyed the majority of the potato crop. A wonderful shot. They tend to gather in huge bunches like this in the fall, and I think in the spring as well. The last several years have seen an invasion of a Japanese or maybe Asian Lady bug, which we call stink bugs because when you crush one or disturb it, it releases a horrid smell in self defense. They bite, too. The ones we see are more orange then the native red ladybugs.

Ladybugs are usually considered beneficial around here, but I've never seen that many in a cluster.

Great capture of these Lady bugs, last year we had many of these round our place, I opened a door that hadn't been open in a long time and where the hinges are were just covered with them much like in your photo.. Also found other groups of them all around the place..
