Description

Royal Street French Quarter New Orleans, Louisiana They call her "Lady Louie." She's a brilliant musician named Doreen Ketchens, and we were fortunate enough to hear her playing on Royal Street in New Orleans the day we were there. I heard her before I saw her, and I thought, "Louie [Armstrong] isn't dead." I couldn't believe what I was hearing! She's amazing. Bill did some research and was able to find her on line. Here's a link to her Bio page To get a better idea of what this was like, listen to Doreen play HERE

What a great shot of her playing that clarinet, Tara! She really looks into her art! I'll have to go check out her sounds.

I listened, and was entranced. My sort of music , the kind I was brought up to, and also the background to my teens and twenties during the trad revival. I once planned to have a New Orleans trad band leading a lorry carrying my coffin, and then I thought why bother, I shan't be able to enjoy it. What a great action pic!

Strange. As Satchmo was a trumpeter and not clarinet/oboe? Now lady Aker Bilk I can relate to. Love the shot though with the dual exposure. Creative stuff.

Thank you so much for the link to her music. It made your own photo come even more alive. I really love how you captured the essence of the artist with the double exposure effect. Extremely well done. I have never been to this area of the country, but I really feel almost like I am traveling along with you. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with us here.

Outstanding! Do you have a camera that takes multiple exposures? Dynamic effect.

A double exposure! (Well, in Photoshop, as you point out; but it's the same thing, either way, as far as I'm concerned---because you superimposed one exposure upon the other, only, having done it all in PS, you did much more work than you would have in the camera.) It's totally effective---I don't recall ever seeing a d. exposure from you before! (It is two, right? Maybe there are more exposures, but I see two primarily...) It works totally, not only because it captures the essence of her devotion, but it also captures her actual musical lines, because she leaps up and then plunges down alot, and that's what she's doing here. Her ghost fingers are so nice against all that blue; and your "non-ghost" clarinet shot is pointing right out of the frame, so she's reaching beyond the shot. A lovely capture of this woman's music, and of the spirit of those streets, period. Lovely!!! (I love that her bass is a tuba, or similar. And he actually solos! And some guy is behind them all with---I think---maracas or something similar. There's a spirit down there of getting whatever musicians will play with you, so long as they can PLAY. And her musical line is so rich, so up and down and all encompassing. And her jazz arrangement is of an old spiritual---maybe from before 1800. A wonderful sample, and thanks for giving it to us: I'd never heard of her. There's a famous cognac which was ranked "the greatest cognac you've never tasted". Well maybe Lady Louie is well known outside N.Orleans, but for me at least, she's unknown. A loving capture of her spirit...)

I too have seen "The Clarinet Queen":) You've captured her classic movements with your double exposure treatment. Her music and your postwork are a complete joy.
