[Red Dance]
[Excerpt from the upcoming story, The Princes]
Prince Mischief twirls around the fire. Not Prince Mischief, no, not any more. Spinning and spinning, faster, he must spin faster, his head lifts to the strange single moon, it is not his moon. The ground beneath him is not his land; the flames dance and he dances with them.
"Who am I now?" screams the Prince. "I am nothing, I am lost."
The Prince spins faster, if only he could spin fast enough. He reaches out with all his might, it can not help him.
"What good is this thing if it can not save me?" cries the Prince.
He knows that is not true, it did save him. The ship burned and he jumped to the empty life pod as the rear section of the ship disintegrated; the pod activated and carried him away.
Where had it taken him?
He dances under the moon, spinning. He knows they are watching. They watched his burning life pod descend through the atmosphere; and when they came, he was frightened. The creatures, similar to him but different, and carrying spears came to crash site; they were primitive and he jumped away.
They had come to help the lost being that had fallen from the sky, but now they are frightened and angry. What do they think of me now? Am I a god to them, a spirit, a demon?
Their eyes were smaller than his and did not have the fire in them. He had been falling deeper into shock and wandered aimlessly and they had come across him again, in the forest at night, and he had been too scared to run. But they had walked right past him, they hadn't seen him; their eyes didn't work in the dark.
That wasn't all; their bodies were weak. From a cliff he watched one of this planet's animals, the yellow one with long teeth that descended from it's mouth. The animal had attacked and two of the primitives fell to it; the same animal had attacked him earlier and he had thrown the animal aside, though he had been frightened and would have run first, but the animal had hunted him and he was forced to fight.
The Prince was still too young to realize he was from the two strongest species the universe had ever created, or that his body was several million years more evolved.
None of that mattered, he was nine years old. Marooned on a strange primordial world. And he was frightened.
The Prince danced and danced and screamed at the moon.
"Father! Brother! Where are you? Help me."

I've missed Zam .. and love seeing him in your art work. And now there's even a little bit of text, a tiny vignette to fill the need for Zam!
