Description
I came to model this interior of a lighthouse after a recent nightmare I had. It has to do with a pretty eerie experience I had as a kid. Back home, down by the ocean, there was this old lighthouse that must have been abandoned in the early 1900's. It was by far the tallest building in the county. It must have reached 150 feet up in the sky. As with any old abandoned building with kids in town, the lighthouse was surrounded by all kinds of bizarre and creepy rumours. For starters it was haunted of course. Allegedly by the previous owner who lived there (lighthouses are not typically owned by private people, but we were kids and didn't know better). We also got to hear that several people jumped to their death from it over the years. Oh, and there was this madman. The notorious madman. I guess every town has it's own madman legend. You know, the average campfire psycho with a hook for a hand who escaped some mental institution. Our madman used to hang out in the lighthouse. He would kill people and hide the bodies in the lighthouse. Not that we ever heard anything on the news about some escaped axe swinging lunatic roaming the lighthouse though. We were kids and the rumours made more sense, and it was a thrilling fantasy anyway. All in all, the lighthouse was a creepy place. Both haunted and housing a madman.
So, of course we used to dare each other to go into the lighthouse. Which we never did. I mean, we would ride our bikes close enough to just look at the spooky, tall monolith from a safe distance. And it was almost as if you could feel the evil aura from it in the air, And then, well, some kid would yell that he saw something in one of the windows and we all fled on our bikes back into town.
But then one day we just went all the way up to the lighthouse. I don't know why, but one thing led to another and we pryed the door open. Imagine the disappointment. No dead madman victims on the floor. Not even any rubble. Not as much as a blood stained knife. It was a relief of course. And we began to feel all mighty being inside this stupid old lighthouse. Nothing to be afraid of. So we started to climb the stairs. It took us a good 20 min to get all the way up. The entrance to the actual lighthouse room at the top was locked and barred. There was no way we could pry that one open.
And that's when we hear the entrance door at the bottom slam shut with a big bang. We just froze and looked at each other. The building had windows every 15 feet or so, which made it reasonably light in there, Only, from this height we just peered down into pitch blackness, If someone just got inside down there, we could simply not see him. All we could do was to pray we wouldn't start hearing someone slowly climbing the stairs. Where would we go? Freaking out doesn't even begin to describe our situation. We held our breaths and waited. And waited. We couldn't hear anything moving down there. All I heard was my own heart beats.
Eventually, we decided to try to sneak down as silent as possible. It felt like an hour. The lower down we came the more we could see of the bottom floor, and nobody seemed to hide out. We came all the way down, opened the door and ran. Oh my god we ran.
It was probably the wind shutting the door. Or maybe some older kids that saw us getting in and wanted to scare us. I don't know. At least it wasn't a madman.
Sometimes I dream of that day though. I'm up there. The door shuts. I can't see the bottom. But I can hear heavy foot steps in the stairs. Slowly making it's way up. I kind of already know I'll soon see the glim of the madman's teeth in his insane twisted grin as he works his way up to me.
So...here it is. The inside view of the lighthouse, as I peer into the darkness. It took some time to adjust the light the way I wanted it. I tried to model it out of my memory, and it's quite spot on. It's not like I'll forget that day though.
