Description
It was a bright Spring morning as Thomas the Tank Engine chugged into Sodor station, the fat controller was waiting......
Alright, it isn't really !..... Following the F-in-L's funeral I took Karen away for a few days R'n'R and we stayed at the splendid Chainbridge Hotel in Llangollen . This is a view from the old stone bridge which connects the two sides of Llangollen across the river Dee. The train caught my eye, even from a distance, it is a Tank Engine but it's called 'Jessie' and runs on the Welsh Mountain Railway.
I must just say " a huge thank you, from Karen and myself, for all the kind messages and thoughts during a difficult time, all were truly, very much appreciated."
We are currently engaged in the next BIG step, transitioning our new house, from F-in-L's home to ours. What do you keep? what is it appropriate to throw away? why the hell did he ever buy that...? There have been smiles along the way and revelations...I found a box containing Peters enlistment papers, Feb 1944, along with his pay book and training record...apparently he was good with a Lee Enfield and a Sten but failed to qualify with a Bren LMG. Also the only driving license he ever had, a slip of paper authorising him to drive 'War Department vehicles'.... there are also so many photo albums, the entire family going back to his Great Grandmother.....when Victoria was on the throne......truly fascinating stuff, some of which I hope to share......

I love the picture! So sad about your father in law and I hope going through his things brings nice memories instead of sadness.

Wonderful scene Neil. It's hard to know what to keep and what not too. When my F-in-L passed away many years ago his wife had so many papers and photo's to sort through. Keeping his personal papers for future generations who will never get to meet him would be a great way to honour his memory. Any you feel you can share would be great to see.

There is a similar place at Llanfair Caereinion. south of Llangollen on the A458, which also has a tank engine like Thomas on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. Glad to see you enjoyed our Welsh countryside.

An impressive view Neil, and a must zoom to appreciate all the detail you have captured. Looks a great place for some quiet R'n'R.. Enjoy your journey through the family memories.. it is amazing what you find, and the revelations can be quite astounding!!

A beautiful photo that Thomas would look very at home in. It is a veritable roller coaster of emotions going through the belongings of a loved one. When my Mother goes, it is going to be a nightmare. She is a pack rat and has a house with enough closets to make you dizzy and a full basement. Her epitaph will be "Never throw anything away. You never know when you might need it." God love her. My sister and brother and I may just invest in a stick or two of dynamite and save a lot of time. Then again . . . .

A fine little panorama Neil. And thanks for catching me up with what's been happening out your way. Sounds like life may be smoothing out for you both once again. Look forward to seeing some of your F-in-L's treasures.
