I came across this recently. It seemed there grew a tree into another tree.

Most likely there was an old tree - the one in the middle, it died back but from the base there was a sucker. The sucker grew up and enveloped its old trunk. You can see that there are still stem suckers being produced, all the small stems in this scene, making my hypothesis all the more likely. Unusual, yes, but explainable too.
