Description

If you are a regular visitor to my postings you will realize that I do not use water in any of my images. Simply put, water scares me. Well I decided to jump into the deep end so to speak and pray that I could swim. There are so many little things that you have to concern yourself with when dealing with H2O. Reflection, refraction, transparency, light color, surface texture are just the main sticking points. After many tries I did finally get some kind of handle on it (LOL). Well, at least water in a deep container. Oh yeah, did I forget to tell you that one size does not fit all! There is deep water, shallow water, still water, wind swept water, large wave water, ocean water, creek water, etc., etc., etc. I guess I will have to tackle each one individually at they cross my path to artistic enlightenment (heavy sigh!) You will notice that I put a Ford GT and two fem-bots also in the scene. This is totally to distract the viewer from my water rendering incompetency. All things considered, it didn't come out too bad. Thanks for all the comments on my "Sisters to the Bone" series and enjoy.

Well Dave, I have to say that your distraction technique worked well on me, LOL. Though I did see the water, my eyes were instantly drawn to the cool car and the awesome reflections on your big busted bots. Very cool render here. The water looks to me like either a glossy floor or a VERY thin layer of water on a dark floor. Not sure why it gives me that impression, it just does. I normally don't get to comment this time of day but I came down with a really nasty case of gout in my left foot yesterday and my job requires me to be on my feet all day. After eating lots of black cherries, taking black cherry capsules and celery seed tablets it's slowly feeling better today.

Hey Mike, the water is actually a water surface from a small pool from another model. I added some bump and displacement and refraction and on and on and on until I found what you see. No secret, just a LOT of trial and error. As for your gout (I had it a few months ago) I found some natural ingredient pills on the internet and presto, I was a whole lot better. If you read about what Dr.s give you, I know you will not go that route! Anyway, hope your feeling better soon.

As I have said previously, your work reminds me of "studies", like practicing musical scales. and I see your approach to "water" will be methodical and comprehensive. One question: What is the reflection of in the lower left and corner? Is the building submerged? By the way, if I get a hole in one do I get to keep the GT?

"X", you told me you weren't into cars that much, so no, you do not get the car even if you hit a whole in one (LOL). As for the reflection or refraction or whatever that you inquire about, I think I will just drain the pool for the next image and let every one see what is going on, OK?

You do yourself a disservice here Dave. Yes water can be a pain and if you are anything like me you go over things 100 times and think it still doesn't look quite right just yet. You've done a great job here though. The GT 40 looks cool and of course I was immediately draw to the big breasted 'bots' lol. Cheers for the comments on my tech work, much appreciated, more on the way.

Very cool Dave... the water surface effect looks great to me.. just the right amount of ripple for a pool,.. nice depth to the water too.. crystal clear... (no kid has pee'd in it yet then..lol). The GT40 and fembots are a nice visual distraction, but it is the water that grabs me first!!!!.. very cool.

Fabulous render and composition. Amazing realism on the GT40 and the girls. And i think the water works quite well in this version.

The water looks very good of course. Normally the Fresnel effect is used for the reflections (the close to 90 degrees of the point of viewing - the less reflections - down to almost 0 at 90 degrees), light volume decay (the thicker water - the more decay). But I often do not like the lows of physics and create reflections according to my wishes :-).

I didn't realise how DEEP the pool was until I looked more carefully! :) Fully agree, water can be a real pain to render well. Isn't it a bit out of place to exhibit a car in the middle of a deep pool? Somewhere atop a mountain? :) (Groovy-looking scene all the same!)
