Description

From bud to full bloom the birth of a rose every season is a rebirth of wonder hope and love. Birth Of A Rose prose by Carol Cavalaris © Credits: Another in my 'Brigitte's Roses' collection, paying tribute to the joy and wonder of seeing a new rose bloom in summer. I was mesmerized by the vivid colors of this Christian Lacroix rose. Created in Photoshop, using rose photo reference, painting techniques, blended with an Organica background by romance works. Special thanks to Brigitte for her beautiful rose photo. This does have a birth-like energy, but also a sun-radiating energy, and to me you're bringing both together in a combined "birth at every moment" feeling. It's always thrilling to see you use such a visceral brush: This feels like physical painting in many ways, not just in the tactile rivulets of paint (color) river-ing through the petals and leaves, but in your contrasts of dark strokes next to light, in the petals---small dark strokes next to lighter ones, which can be done digitally for sure, but which are applied with such hand-strewn energy that it's almost impossible to believe you did it on a screen. (You use lots of varying hues for the veins of the petals. Van Gogh did this, the Impressionists and Post Impressionists did this to create enormous energy and radiance in their hues.) There's grain here too---also a digital as well as physical characteristic; but your application of it feels very physical to me. The center rose is as paintlike as any flower I've seen of yours; and it's surrounded by radiating energies, which take the form of petals and leaves and sheer light. The meld between plant and light is strong here---the petals morph into light very easily---and it makes the flower seem made of energy as much as anything else. (But a visceral energy, not an abstract energy. One notices, throughout your work, that energies are very sensual in your hands, not abstracted or invisible.) Your hues undulate as if through the spectrum (the visible spectrum); and the lower (green) portion is almost pure energy itself, where lights blend with leaves and shadows to make a cosmic 'soup' (from whence this flower blooms). I've said it many times: Your grounds (your lowest levels) have an inner feeling to them, an inner place from which everything in these pieces arises. And it's odd, too, because green is really a color of full-blown nature: But the way you use greens in your grounds intimates inner states as much as outer---a substratum from which your blooms explode into the world: That's a very chakric thing. And those lower portions have lots of texture, in fact they have almost rock-like formations...as if they're made of bedrock. A big bloom coming out of an inward place; and your yellows and reds in the rose are triumphant. A beautiful image, Carol, with the feel of an artist who's in full bloom and whose brush (so to speak) moves without impediment with prompts from the innermost voice. A beautiful portrait of the soul.
