Description

Yes this place was as cold as it looks. The winds were wipping at about 40 mph and the temp was 5F which easily put the windchill at around -25 F. Fortunately we could drive to this spot so after doing some shots of the lake we just sat in the car and waited for the sun to drop onto some of the local peaks. This is looking across the southwest end of Lake Abraham. The Ram Range forms the distant peaks and at their base is the Kootney Plains named for the Kootney Indians. The plains are a sacred area and are a designated wilderness protected site. Because of the high wind speeds the Plains are kept pretty much snow free allowing winter grazing of elk but also keeping the area abnormally dry creating a prairie habitat in the mountains. Unfortunatey poachers also know this is a remote yet easily accesible site and wildlife populations have declined in recent years as more of these cretins have powerful quads to get them into these sites.

Impressive! Color and contrast are excellent. I never have seen snow, but I can feel the cold by seeing your image.

Great image and interesting info - I was wondering why the vegetation on the far side of the lake looked a little sparse.

Beautiful for sure. Looking at that open field, I can feel the wind and the knives slicing my cheeks! Great shot.

Yikes.. it was -30 windchill here once this winter. I almost cried from the cold. You are far braver than I am, Roxy, but.. then you get all the beautiful shots, too. It makes me angry to think about the poachers. Honestly some people have no regard for wildlife or nature at all.
