Description

Several months ago three little barn owls were rescued from air ducts thrown in a refuse bin during a building demolition. Someone found the babies, three of possibly six survived. The weather did not permit young birds with no training with parents in the wild to be released..not yet. They had to learn to fly strongly and to catch live prey like mice and voles. Populations seem to be declining overall and that is a pity. These owls are a joy and soon will be released. They are in a large flight cage now and are fed live food. Photos are quite difficult in a somewhat small area with quick flying owls. Focus is tough but on this day exposure was also considering a turn on way put sunlight at background and another was shadow. This is a fortunate photo. They are smallish looking owls with large wings for rapid, silent night flight. They have the hearing to catch a mouse in total darkness. that is amazing. I had a screech owl nest in a tree on my property some years back and this year I'm hearing a barn owl at nite on my property I guess doing its mating call. I have a screech owl box I made but I haven't put it up yet...I'm trying to get some bluebirds to take up in a box I built for them. I've become quite taken with birds...this a a great detailed shot... chills and thrills

I've been watching a live cam of a mating pair recently, as well as cams of various bald eagle nests as they lay and hatch. It's become a minor personal tradition with me every late winter, through spring, until fledge. What a splendid shot this is. Thank you for sharing, and for the smile.

A terrific capture of this raptor. Excellent sharpness. I am jealous. Can't seem to catch a bird unless its sitting still.
