Description
Well. these little guys are 3 weeks here. The box turtle shell caused quite a ruckus when mom brought it to the nest. After several wrestling matches, the larger chick took control of it.
I was fascinated to see that much like the raccoon kits I get, he just took the shell to the other side of the nest and tucked it away. After the larger one went to sleep, the little guy pulled it from the hiding place and proceeded to eat the little meat he could get out of it. He then went to sleep, forgetting to hide the evidence! When the larger guy awoke, he seemed quite agitated that "little brother" had taken his prize. Note the frown on his face!
I guess that all kids of all kinds have a lot in common.
Yes, I do sometimes spend hours in the solitude just watching these guys. They are amazing.

I have been photographing this nest for several years. In that time I have come to understand that birds have curiosity about their surroundings Very much like the mammals I work with. Many "educated" people like to say they only act on instinct. This simply is not true. Some of the things I have seen can not be just instinct. Whil i do take liberty's with the story lines a lot is based on the actions of the birds. This story played out just as I told it. I do understand that eagles have that stern look naturally but it just fit too well with the actions to resist.

Aw, Bev! From tears (from your previous post) to a good laugh with this one! Kids will be kids. I see the same behaviour in the crows and ravens where I live. The competition for food. Hiding it, only to find some pesky relative's absconded with it or eaten it! Funny how the little fellow on the left is lying on his side sleeping, toes pointing straight up! One can really see big brother is thinking quite a bit! Beautiful shot! :-)
