Description
This mama raccoon was trapped by someone that thought she had rabies. Her bewildered look and the fright in her eyes say it all. In this part of our world, we have almost no rabies. The wildlife division of our federal government has been doing an oral bait drop for several years. This has been so effective that we only see 1 or 2 cases every 2-3 years. Most of the time it is bat rabies. However, humans, being the "superior" race.always scream rabies at the sight of a raccoon, fox or skunk. These poor animals are always killed when ever they have any problem. This mother had been shot. Her wound stank so bad that I thought there would be no way to save her. She went into labor and had 5 kits prematurely. 3 of the kits died within 2 days.
I have worked on her for the last 10 days. I looked at her wound today and it has all most healed.
She will be fine. She has been so very good and has not been aggressive at all. I used to be surprised at this behavior in an adult wild animal, but I have seen to often for it to be anything but understanding.

your pictures and commentary say it all. While I am a hunter, I feel that the trapping of wild animals as such and in this manner for obscure reasons just baffles me. I know that admission of being a hunter may cause a division between us, but I do it in the most responsible manner possible. that is I hunt for game management and for meat - no trophy hunts for me - that's just cruel and not necessary. to hunt a raccoon is just not on my card. I do commend you on your work with these beautiful creatures. peace be with you and may you have a blessed and Happy Easter

I have no problem with responsible hunting. I am not popular with other rehabbers on this . I tell them that the dear my son shoots and eats has lived a much more humain life and died a more humain death than any commercial meat they buy. I do not believe in trophy hunting or as they do here hunting for entertainment. To chase this beautiful animal and watch 8 or 9 Dogs chew it to pieces, well I do not call that a sport. I put it on the same level as dog fighting.

Ignorance of people!!! I like you abhor trophy hunting. I personnally could not hunt but I do not condemn responsible people who do.

It's great that the mum is OK this gives the babies a good chance of surviving. I live in the UK and we don't have Rabies or any dangerous wild animals ( one poisonousness snake ) but if there is any incident the hue and cry to kill that animal is unbelievable but on the other hand we have the do gooders who want to reintroduce wolves and bears just because they used to live here in the distant past.
