Description

Several weeks ago I visited what the US Navy calls, The National Naval Aviation Museum. It was a spectacular experience for me...a real aviation nut:-) My intent is to extract what I hope to be some unusual photos from the more than 500 I took that day in the museum that may even interest a few of my non-aviation friends. This first photo is of an aircraft that made the first landing of a pure jet aircraft on an aircraft carrier in July 1946. FH-1 Phantom by McDonald-Douglas

Not an easy task! It took me quite a while to learn to land a Hellcat on a carrier in a computer simulation.

Well, you succeed, Bill! It looks almost like a car mascot at first glance.

Excellent. Did they have a SR-71 Blackbird there? I love that plane! The front of the fuselage always reminds me of the sub from voyage to the bottom of the sea.

Sort of hard to land an SR-71 on an aircraft carrier. I don't expect they had one there! I like the muscular look of this. You've brought out its lines with light and reflections very nicely! Excellent image. :*

A car mascot? What is that? Me thinks a hood ornament, but a mascot? In any event, cool POV and deep contrast lighting effects in this snap of an aircraft I never even knew existed that far back. I thought it was still Corsairs and Hellcats on aircraft carriers back in July of 1946.

Oooo - A black Phantom! She really looks sleek from this angle. I had forgotten about this model - When 'Phantom" comes up, I usually think of the F4 model (and of course my little white and red one! LOL) I really like this angle, Bill!

Wow, this is simply amazing. The light and that glow are just gorgeous. And can you imagine how that pilot must have felt, aiming that plane at that teeny, tiny little boat floating in the ocean??? lol

Stunning capture, Bill; great POV not usually seen for this kind of shot, and the light really melts over the surface so beautifully. Well done!!

It's hard to believe, from your most unusual pov, that this is a plane as opposed to abstract art made in the 'shape' of a plane, or a very large model. Your angle renders this a phantasmagorical piece of swooping metal and glass which just happens to be in the shape of a plane. The light splashes across the surface, the surface seems to spill over itself, the nuts and bolts seem almost sloppy from this pov (and very handmade), and the cylinder coming out the right/back (brown, rusty) is like a rocket thrusting out the back. A very creative pov and fine work with the light and texture of the metal. It's plane alright, but it's made to look like a gigantic sculpture planted in a museum. And your choice to capture/crop it with the wing spilling right off the bottom of the pic makes it seem like it's spilling everywhere. A very creative shot. You achieved your goal, as I know little about planes, but I've sure been drawn in by this beauty.
