This is a follow up for those of you who wish to learn of Whitey's final fate.
I autopsied little Whitey this evening. My suspicion of mycoplasma infection (very common in rats) in the lungs was wrong. His gasping for air was due to massive lung cancer. I've taken a few photos of the autopsy, but will NOT post them as the lung photos are extremely unpleasant. There was NO functional lung tissue left - only huge, ugly tumor lumps in both lung cavities.
So, instead, I'm posting a photo of Whitey's weaponry (yes, what he used to bite me with!). The upper teeth are orange on the front aspect and 1/2 centimeter long. The lower are white and 1 centimeter long. No wonder it felt like being slammed with a tennis raquet when he bit me, though probably no more than 1/2 centimeter penetrated (his nose was in the way!).
So this is the last of Whitey - I buried him behind the parking garage an hour ago. There are bushes by the wall so nobody goes there. I trust he will be left alone there.
Rest in peace my little friend.

That is such an ugly way to die. RIP Whitey! you're no longer in pain! thanks for sharing the news. how are the other two holding out?

Beige and Blackie are OK, but they're still looking for Whitey (which means the little fellows miss him!). When not looking, they huddle together in a corner. When I walk in Blackie greets me as usual by clambering in the cage corner nearest the bathroom door, but his behaviour is somewhat different. I assume they will get over their sorrow just like I will get over mine. Thanks for your concern!

Yes, rest in peace Whitey. You are right Michael. The others will miss him. So often people think we have a monopoly on grief. Not so.

Poor little creature. No more pain for him. I have a place in my heart for all creatures.

Such a sad way to go for them as well as us. Your little buddy is no longer in pain - may he rest in peace.
