Description

One of the mainstay bombers/recon/anti-submarine aircraft of the RAF, the Vickers Wellington, had the distinction of being the only bomber produced for the duration of the war with a count of 11,461 for all versions of the aircraft. It was constructed of an unusual geodesic lattice frame, to which wooden ribs were attached covered by doped fabric.. It took somewhat longer to produce, but the unconventional aircraft construction gave a singular integrity to the craft. It could withstand considerable damage and still retain its integrity to keep flying when other aircraft would have collapsed and crashed. There are some great pics and stories of severely damaged aircraft returning their crews to home base. Additionally, the unconventional and lighter resulting aircraft had much better range to power ratio than similar craft. The first RAF bombing attack of the war was carried out by Wellingtons, but it was soon realized that the aircraft was severely compromised by an inability to defend its midships from attack and many were lost outright before bomber command switched tactics to night bombing raids. The Wellington was replaced with larger four engine bombers in Europe, but as well as serving as anti-submarine patrols for Coastal Command, it served in India, the Middle East, Ghana, and the Far East. Its bullish looks signaled its proud and tenacious service during the war. I think it's a very interesting aircraft with an equally interesting tradition. When I completed the comp and setup in Vue, I went to render it and after about 20 minutes, I was informed that the render would take an astounding 2231 hours! So, I wound up doing selective area renders in appropriate resolutions and putting the pieces together in photoshop. The technique worked so well that I will definitely use it when I can effectively. Vickers Wellington: Free on Sketchup warehouse by sletch2003. Heavily rebuilt and prepped for an in-house retex job. Crew: RAF pilot from Neiwil in one of his aircraft. Not sure which one, but I'm guessing his Hurricane. C4d6CE+XL, UVMAPPERPro, Vue6 Infinite, PS Cs3

Good job on the model and terrific scene. I wasn't familiar with this aircraft but it looks great.

Very nice composition. I am wondering because the long render times of Vue. So the way to compose the parts in PS is OK. In the end the picture must be OK. Great work.

Gorgeous image, a great plane and one that is not often seen around here. Designed by Barnes Wallis of bouncing bomb fame. 2231 hours !! Vickers set a world record, building a Wellington from scratch and getting it airborne in under 24 hrs......time & motion and health & safety have a lot to answer for...........

Yeah, over 2000 hours would not have worked. I'm glad the workaround worked as well for this render. About 9 hours or so ultimately. It was worth the extra work though, it turned out pretty nice. And, yes, that 24 hour completed build to flight was very impressive. If I remember correctly, they normally took about 60 hours to complete.

As far as I know the last complete Wimpy left 'alive' is being restored 'again'.. Its just been taken off display in the RAF Museum Hendon, taken to Cosford and is being back restored to an Earlier Mk.. I'll try and find a descent shot and post it for you mate.. This is great, well done creating it.. Looking forward to your next.. Rob
