High all. It has been a while since I last posted a photo. I hope everyone is enjoying the end of winter as much as I am. I can finally get some much needed yard work done. I had a little time to spare today so I thought I would share an image from a recent unexpected photo opportunity. I was sitting in my recliner Thursday night when I heard the crunch of dry cat food being eaten. Since my cat was in my lap, I knew I had a visitor. Sure enough, when I got up and checked the cat food bowl, I saw 2 little opossums who were so engrossed in eating that they didn't seem to realize I had approached them. They must have entered the house through the cat door that opens onto the back porch. I managed to catch one of them but the other one scurried under some furniture. I put the opossum I caught into a large cooler and put the cat food bowl into a live trap cage. Over the next three hours, I caught 6 more young opossums before I went to bed. On Friday morning, I decided to make a through check of my back porch and sure enough, I saw a full grown mama opossum peeking at me from behind some boxes. I managed to catch her by hand and I put her with the babies I had in the cooler. I took all of them down to a creek on my property and let them go. The little opossums were old enough to fend for themselves, but just barely This was not the first time I have found a mother opossum with babies in my home and so I suspected that there were probably more than just 7 babies. Sure enough, once it got dark Friday night, I again heard dry cat food being crunched and once again, my cat was in my lap. The trap had caught 2 more of them and by the time I went to bed, I had gathered up another 4. This morning I released this 2nd bunch at the same place I had the others but this time I took some photos. I will set the trap again tonight to see if any more make an appearance. During the late 70's, I found a lone baby opossum in the 5 acre or so parking lot where I worked. It didn't seem like a good place for a baby critter so I took it home and kept it in a pen I put together on my apartment balcony. I only kept it for about a month before turning it loose in a rural area. It ate out of my hand; fell asleep on my lap occasionally and even used a litter box. I think baby opossums are cute but not so much the adults, lol. Besides that, wild animals should not live their lives as pets. Lee
