Description
Originally, I had reserved this title for a Chinook-sized version of the TriCoPter, because the triple rotor layout looked quite like a suitable solution for a heavy transport helicopter. So the heavy tilt-quad is number two already. Basically, it is the wing of the pre-previous post, scaled by a factor of 2, with modifications in the outer part, nacelles as well as cut inner edges, otherwise they would penetrate the fuselage when sweeping.
As it is still a prototype or research aircraft, the landing gear is rigid. That's also why there are two additional wheels suspended with long cantilevers for testing how to deal with the movement of the center of gravity when sweeping the wings. Due to the strong displacement of that big fuselage the pressure probe is mounted on a long boom upstream from the tail. Four cameras look down from there observing the sweeping procedure.
However, the fuselage should be pressurized to be able to determine high altitude performance, such configuration must climb high to be able to cruise at acceptable speed and power consumption as well as structural loads.
wing span: 38425 mm
wing surface: 90 sqm
length: 21500 mm
rotor diameter: 7000 mm
assumed take off weight: 25000/40000 kg (vertical/horizontal)
est. power necessary at 2000m altitude (ISA) for
hovering (25 t): 7500 kW
horizontal flight (40 t): 2000 kW
watch the transformation process from four engined aircraft to quad helicopter for vertical landing at (to me, it looks like flying forward quite stabilly in between with strong positive v-shape or/and sweep):
