Description

This is a wood duck chick. It is just about the happiest duck I have ever seen. I guess that he is about 5 days old. I had just about given up on seeing any today and was about to leave. If you have never heard wood ducks coming in, well lets just say that they make A LOT of noise ! I believe that the little ones stay at the edge of the pond and come out when the adults return. There may be a sitter with them. The one year olds seem to be with the chicks. I will post pics of them later.

Looks like he's discovering his wing muscles. A lot to program into that little brain. Just consider a single feather and all the muscles it needs to move and rotate for flying. All trained and learned by trial and error. A fantastic machinery hidden under that surface of cuteness! None of which this little fellow is really aware of, except using it to flap about. Simply amazing. Thanks for posting this happy little fellow! Makes going to bed all the more pleasant! :-)
