Hi, I'm Andrea, and I'm interested in creatures and plants both wild and tamed, and people of all sorts. I only use a compact digital camera ,as I love being able to get it into a back pocket, and not have to cart heavy kit about. I carry a Panasonic Lumix TZ series, binoculars and a hand lens almost everywhere. Most of my outings are with the dogs so I only use point and shoot.
I am getting the hang of Photoshop, thanks to some very kind folk on RR!Â
I have a wildlife garden in Bournemouth, Dorset, in the UK, and spend a lot of time there . I retired from teaching art to teenagers a while ago.
I'm now getting some good results with my digi compacts; it took me a while to make the switch from my old film camera, an 1960 ish Pentax Spotmatic, but the mistakes are much cheaper! Â
I have 4 lodgers, 3 dogs and a parrot who, as at 2017, I have had 40 years.
I has so far had 19 dogs, mostly rescues.

Natures cruel but necessary selection, this thinning process can tug at heart strings, but we'd be inundated with furry little animals were it otherwise. Super pic.

Forgot to say we should have the same process in parliament :)

This has been a first class follow through to the end Andrea, I hope they all make it in the big big world.

Some may argue that four out of 11 eggs is not a great success but in many ways this is how nature works, four isn't such a bad result when you consider the work for the parents, it is this time of year we sadly may see dead naked baby birds on the ground as they are removed and dropped from the nest, Excellent capture and great to have a full documentation from nesting to eggs and fledging. What became of the blackbirds?... did they try again and was it maybe third time lucky?.

What tenderness! Great capture! :)

How cute to see that :)

Wonderful record shots!

I assume that the species have a large amount of offspring because of the low survival rate. I'm surprised the parents had the strength and wherewithal to remove the dead ones from the nest.

Thanks for the update. Nice to see some of them survived. I remember the sad fate of the last batch (Blue Tits?). When Ronnie gets his plan together have him send it over here. I think our Congress wins the prize for dead weight.

Nice perspective too...

... thats nature, so sad for them who have no chance. - and so fun comment about parliament, LOL after all!

A shame she lost so many but at least a few made it. The robin is nesting in the greenhouse again under an agave six eggs that I can see.

Four of eleven seems pretty good. A wonderful series of shots!

Pretty good survival rate I'd say, now one hopes the four make it to adulthood and have progeny of their own. Haven't had a nest to look at closely for a couple of years now, last was in the weeping cherry tree, it was the American Robins. They nested around the house a number of years in a row, but not the last two or three years.

A fantastic capture Andrea and we must all remember that Mother Nature can be harsh!
