Description

I think they are sisters. Perhaps, they are not. I don’t know much about them, but I know that they are old, weathered women, quite happy to wear glass skirts. I’ve seen them numerous times, and each time, they recalled the forgotten history of Rapa Nui. I grew accustomed to seeing them at night, but upon the complete polarity switch my schedule has undergone, I began to see them by day: the same three women wearing glass skirts. They stand behind glass: observing, conversing, keeping cryptic secrets. They stand behind glass, blurring with reflections. I was always intrigued by their glass, their reflections, and their gnarled, stony features by night. During the afternoon hours, when a narrow sliver of sunlight is able to touch them, their familiar curtain of reflections does something else. Light, when reflected bounces and dances around: child-like. This is the opposite of what reflected shadows might do. Sunlight, when reflected in a curtain before the Women, is a playful thing. The darkness, shown of the face of the very same glass, is a sultry beast given to provocative, intimate caresses. The women (sisters, friends, or something else) don’t seem to care. They simply stand—immobile—in their green, glass skirts. As we are in the general vicinity of Tara’s birthday, I feel that it’s only fitting to dedicate an image with reflections to the lady that does all sorts of great stuff with reflections, and so without further ado and all of that, Happy Birthday, Tara. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting: now that I’m nearly accustomed to my new work schedule (same job, different hours) I’ll be on line a wee bit more; the thing is, I’ve just discovered that the worst form of Jetlag often occurs when you don’t travel anywhere! Who would have thought that?

Very cool photo and interesting discussion of these three - perhaps they are the Kindly Ones in another form? let us hope not for it would do no good to wish them upon anyone, especially for their birthday, such as Tara's. Very thought provoking image and narrative

Reading this I realize how much I've missed your Chip-arrations; your way of seeing the world just a bit askew of what most others see. That's a good thing! Glad you'll be around more once your non-jetlag-lag settles. Rearranging work schedules is a hard thing to get used to. When I was in school a million years back I was also working 3 part-time jobs, which included evening/nights/holidays in the hospital lab. Took me forever to get sorted about what day/time of day it was. Regarding this image, it's a typically Chipesquely enigmatic and variably interpretable shot; I think there's definitely a story there. Well done!

A total Chipish narrative and the perfect gift for Tara. You do these SO well, and I know she'll love it. I'd love to walk down those sidewalks again with my camera; that was SO much fun!!

That particular sidewalk is within decent walking distance of Reza's too!

Absolutely full of interesting ideas and thoughts! Thoughts and reflections in Italian can be used with the same word "Reflections"

Thank you: I know nothing about the Italian language other than the fact that it sounds nice (better than French, but don't tell anybody!) In English, "reflections" can often be applied to thoughts as well as literal reflections, but not commonly. I like it when languages do that: one word can contain so many words that way! Thank you for commenting!

Superb reflections and three very interesting sculptures. I get the overwhelming impression of The Three Fates from Greek myth. The Fates were described as old women. They were supposed to appear three nights after a child's birth to determine the course of its life. It seems the Fates have smiled on Tara. A terrific birthday gift.

Oooohh ooooohh oooooohh!!! I love this! Love It! Those three figures are so enigmatic, so open to interpretation, so filled with possibility, it's impossible to look at them and NOT come up with an other-off-worldly plot line! And the reflections are just perfect for them. That diagonal stair gives the image life and movement, and I love the glimpse of that gorgeous, tall vase farther back in the gallery. I studied the image, found the place on street view, and stood where you stood (virtually speaking of course) when you took this picture. What could be better? Thank you a million times for this, my friend. It's fabulous!

Your way of putting things together is fascinating! At that, you manage to leave so much volume for the viewer's imagination to wander around endlessly.

I have to admit, I've never though of light as being child-like and playful. I'm more rational than artful. But I suppose there is truth in this idea. Especially when contrasted (maybe a little pun there) against the impact of shadows at night. You reflected ladies seem to float in the scene like ancient goddesses. And like all women they do keep secrets. In the back of my head I suspect that they know what's going to happen tomorrow and a thousand years from now. But they will share their knowledge only with each other.
